This allows more of our foot to be on the ground to increase the base of support increasing the likelihood that the center of mass can remain over the base of support. This in turn gives us stability. However in order for such a foot to function properly, the body has to move forward on the stationary foot which requires ankle joint dorsiflexion and MTP dorsiflexion. If either of these mechanisms fail, foot pathology can develop.
